2015 Ford F-150 Common Problems

Research symptoms before assuming a part has failed.

A 2015 F-150 may have a different engine, drivetrain, service history and problem pattern from the next truck in the parking lot. This guide separates symptoms worth checking from documented service information so you can decide where to look first.

In brief

Transmission shifts, cold-start noises, cooling concerns, electrical warnings and four-wheel-drive behaviour are good starting points. Record mileage, weather, load and scan codes.

What kind of trouble are you having?

Start by identifying the system. Is the truck shifting unexpectedly, running roughly, grinding near a front wheel, losing coolant, struggling to start or displaying a specific warning? Record the exact symptom, outside temperature, mileage, speed, gear and whether you were towing. A pattern is often more informative than a generic search for “2015 F-150 issues.”

Transmission and unexpected shifts

A hard shift, delayed engagement and an unexpected downshift are not interchangeable symptoms. Ford safety recall 26S28 concerns certain 2015–2017 F-150 vehicles equipped with the 6R80 six-speed transmission. Ford says a powertrain-control software remedy became available in July 2026. Check your VIN and the latest instructions rather than relying on recall totals from third-party sites.

Four-wheel-drive grinding

Some 2013–2018 four-wheel-drive F-150 vehicles can make intermittent grinding noises while driving in 2WD. Ford TSB 20-2028 identifies loss of vacuum to the integrated wheel ends (IWEs) and component wear as possible causes for trucks meeting its criteria. This is a service bulletin, not a blanket recall or a diagnosis of every noise.

3.5L EcoBoost cold-start rattle

Ford TSB 18-2305 concerns a brief ticking, tapping or rattling noise from the top/front of the engine after a long cold soak on certain 3.5L EcoBoost F-150s built by May 29, 2015. It does not apply automatically to the 2.7L EcoBoost, naturally aspirated 3.5L or 5.0L V8.

When to get help promptly

Unexpected drivetrain behaviour, braking or steering faults, severe overheating, low-oil-pressure warnings, persistent heavy misfires or a flashing check-engine light can be urgent. Get the vehicle to a safe location and seek qualified assistance rather than continuing to test it on the road.

Next steps

  • Note the exact engine and 4x2/4x4 configuration.
  • Save all stored and pending fault codes before clearing them.
  • Check the VIN for open recalls, and keep past repair paperwork.
  • Use the relevant symptom-specific guide below before deciding which component to inspect.

DON'S OWNER NOTES

I own a 2015 Ford F-150 and plan to add real observations, photos and maintenance notes to these guides. I won't present an untested repair as something I've personally done.
