ERROR CODES / OWNER GUIDE
2015 F-150 Check Engine Light and Error Codes
A fault code points to a condition, not necessarily a bad part.
An OBD-II trouble code tells you what a computer noticed. It does not tell you, by itself, which part needs replacing. The best first step is to save the entire scan report and the conditions under which the fault appeared.
P0300–P0308 are misfire-related, P0171/P0174 indicate lean conditions, P0299 relates to underboost on equipped engines, and P0420/P0430 refer to catalyst efficiency.
Start with the full code report
Record stored, pending and permanent codes, freeze-frame data and any dashboard messages. A simple reader may miss manufacturer-specific information in transmission, 4WD or body modules. Do not erase the codes before a diagnosis unless you have saved the details.
Misfire codes: P0300 through P0308
P0300 indicates random/multiple misfires, while P0301 onward refer to numbered cylinders. An ignition coil may be one possibility, but fuel delivery, wiring, air leaks or mechanical concerns can cause similar results. A flashing check-engine light or major shaking deserves immediate attention.
Lean conditions: P0171 and P0174
These codes indicate a lean fuel-trim condition on bank 1 or bank 2. They do not prove an oxygen sensor is bad. Intake leaks, inaccurate air measurement, fuel problems or exhaust leaks can affect readings.
Turbo underboost: P0299
On an EcoBoost-equipped truck, P0299 describes boost below the requested level. Hoses, charge-air plumbing, controls or measurement issues can be relevant. The base 3.5L V6 and 5.0L V8 are not turbocharged, so engine identification comes first.
EVAP leaks: P0455 and P0456
These indicate evaporative emissions system leak conditions. Depending on the vehicle, a sealing issue, purge or vent valve, hose or other component may be involved. The size of the detected leak is not a reliable estimate of repair cost.
Next steps
- Save the exact code and any related codes.
- Note whether the check-engine light is steady or flashing.
- Identify the engine, symptoms and freeze-frame conditions.
- Use a code-specific guide, then have likely causes tested.
Sources and further reading
These are the original manufacturer resources and service documents used to check the technical points above. They may be updated, and vehicle-specific information takes priority.
I own a 2015 Ford F-150 and plan to add real observations, photos and maintenance notes to these guides. I won't present an untested repair as something I've personally done.
