2015 F-150 4WD Grinding Noise and IWE Problems
What a front-wheel grinding noise in 2WD may mean.
If you hear an intermittent grind or ratcheting sound near the front wheels while driving in 2WD, the integrated wheel end system is one possible cause on four-wheel-drive models. It is not the only possibility.
Ford published service guidance for intermittent grinding while driving in two-wheel-drive mode on certain 2013–2018 four-wheel-drive F-150 trucks.
What the driver may notice
An IWE-related noise may be most noticeable under acceleration in two-wheel-drive mode. Note which side it seems to come from, whether it changes with vehicle speed and whether the sound appears only during particular weather or loads. Do not use a phone to record while driving.
What Ford documented
Ford TSB 20-2028 applies to certain 2013–2018 F-150, Expedition and Navigator vehicles with 4WD and an intermittent 2WD grinding concern. It describes vacuum loss and/or wear in IWE components and directs technicians through a diagnosis and repair procedure. It is not proof that every front-end grind is an IWE failure.
Why diagnosis matters
Front wheel bearings, brake hardware, tires and other moving components can produce similar noises. If a shop immediately recommends replacing both front hubs without testing the actual noise, ask how the proposed repair was confirmed.
What to bring to the shop
Provide the time and conditions of the noise, any 4WD or AdvanceTrac messages, vehicle mileage and any previous front-end work. A shop familiar with the Ford IWE vacuum system can use the appropriate tests rather than guessing.
When to stop
A severe grinding, binding, unstable steering or rapidly worsening wheel noise deserves prompt safe inspection. Avoid long drives until a safety-related front-end problem is ruled out.
Next steps
- Confirm that your truck is a 4x4.
- Write down speed, acceleration and 2WD/4WD selection when noise occurs.
- Check for related warning lights.
- Have vacuum, IWE components and other front wheel causes inspected.

I own a 2015 Ford F-150 and plan to add real observations, photos and maintenance notes to these guides. I won't present an untested repair as something I've personally done.
